The Gabriela Mistral Foundation announces Ms. Isabel Allende
as recipient of the
2014 Gabriela Mistral Foundation Humanitarian Award
New York, March 1, 2014—The Gabriela Mistral Foundation has the pleasure of announcing the “2014 Humanitarian Award Dinner” which will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in New York City. This years’s award will be presented to Ms. Isabel Allende—author of over twenty books that have been translated into more than thirty languages and sold over sixty million copies. Ms. Allende is being recognized for her great humanitarian work on behalf of the women of Chile and the world as founder of the Isabel Allende Foundation.
Following the death of her daughter Paula, and in her honor the Isabel Allende Foundation was founded in 1996, dedicated to the protection and empowerment of women and children worldwide. Paula was only twenty-eight years old when she died, a graceful and spiritual young woman, the light of her family who cared deeply for others. When in doubt her motto was: What is the most generous thing to do? The foundation, based on her ideals of service and compassion, was created to continue her work. Ms. Allende remarks: “My foundation is guided by a vision of a world in which women have achieved social and economic justice. It is only a drop of water in the vast desert of human need.”
The Gabriela Mistral Foundation will also present a "Special Recognition" to Mrs. Cecilia Morel Montes for her Humanitarian and Cultural Work on behalf of Chile and its people and to International Surgical Mission Support for their Humanitarian work on behalf of the poor people of the world with medical needs.
The literary part of the program will include a “Conversation with Ms. Allende” at 6pm; followed by book signing, a reception and award dinner with musical performance.
The evening will also include a "Literature & Arts Silent Auction" in which 12 Chilean women visual artists have come together to work in a unique project through which different disciplines will meet. Working with a total of 12 titles --6 by Mistral and 6 by Allende--[each artist will choose one of these works]; the artist will have two copies of each book. One of the books will be "artistically and creatively intervened" resulting in a one of a kind signed art work. Each artist is free to choose the technique she wishes to apply: oil, watercolour, textiles, etc.The second book will be for your reading pleasure. The books will be auctioned in sets. The project is curated by Rocio Aranda Alvarado, Chief Interim Curator of Museo del Barrio in NY and Gloria Garafulich-Grabois, Director of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation and Founder & International Director of the Chapter in Chile of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington DC.
The annual dinner is the most important and only fundraiser of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation.
Its success will make our future work on behalf of the people in need a reality.
