Book launch of the first complete bilingual edition of Gabriela Mistral's

NEW YORK, September 20, 1014 -- Ninety-two years after the original publication of Gabriela Mistralās masterpiece DesolaciĆ³n in the City of New York, the first full-length translation of this important book has been published with translations by Liliana Baltra and Michael P. Predmore. The book is being published and released by Latin America Review Press. Special launch events will be held in:

Although Gabriela Mistralās early years as a poet were spent in her native land, Mistralās first book was not published in Chile, but in the United States in the City of New York, when in 1922, at the initiative of the Spanish literary critic, Federico de Onis, the editorial of the Instituto de las EspaƱas in New York, published the first edition of Gabriela Mistralās book of poems and short essays, DesolaciĆ³n. The book includes poems that speak of love and death such as the well known āSonnets of Death.ā Most of the poems included in the book were written ten years earlier while Mistral was living in the northern city of Coquimbito, Chile. The translations offer an insight into the Chilean customs of Mistralās day which have remained a part of the countryās culture. This bilingual edition will be a helpful source for teachers and students of Latin American authors and will also allow English and Spanish language readers to fully enjoy the work of Gabriela Mistral.

Aunque Gabriela Mistral comenzĆ³ su carrera de poeta en su tierra natal, su primer libro no fuĆ© publicado en Chile sino que en Estados Unidos, en la ciudad de Nueva York. En 1922, por iniciativa de estudiantes de la Universidad de Columbia y de su profesor, el crĆtico de literatura de lengua hispana, Federico de Onis, la editorial del Instituto de las EspaƱas de Nueva Yorkāahora conocido como Instituto CervantesāpublicĆ³ la primera ediciĆ³n del libro de poemas y ensayos āDesolaciĆ³n.ā El libro incluye poemas que hablan de amor y muerte como el conocido āSonetos de la Muerte.ā Mistral escribiĆ³ la mayorĆa de los poemas incluĆdos en este libro, diez aƱos antes cuando viviĆ³ en la ciudad nortina de Coquimbito en Chile. Las traducciones ofrecen una mirada a las costumbres chilenas en la Ć©poca de Mistralāmuchas de las cuĆ”les aĆŗn son parte de la cultura nacional. Esta ediciĆ³n bilingĆ¼e, ofrece excelente material de referencia y estudio para profesores y estudiantes de literatura latinoamericana y tambiĆ©n permitira a lectores de la lengua inglesa disfrutar la obra de Gabriela Mistral.
