Book launch of the first complete bilingual edition of Gabriela Mistral's

NEW YORK, September 20, 1014 -- Ninety-two years after the original publication of Gabriela Mistral’s masterpiece Desolación in the City of New York, the first full-length translation of this important book has been published with translations by Liliana Baltra and Michael P. Predmore. The book is being published and released by Latin America Review Press. Special launch events will be held in:

Although Gabriela Mistral’s early years as a poet were spent in her native land, Mistral’s first book was not published in Chile, but in the United States in the City of New York, when in 1922, at the initiative of the Spanish literary critic, Federico de Onis, the editorial of the Instituto de las Españas in New York, published the first edition of Gabriela Mistral’s book of poems and short essays, Desolación. The book includes poems that speak of love and death such as the well known “Sonnets of Death.” Most of the poems included in the book were written ten years earlier while Mistral was living in the northern city of Coquimbito, Chile. The translations offer an insight into the Chilean customs of Mistral’s day which have remained a part of the country’s culture. This bilingual edition will be a helpful source for teachers and students of Latin American authors and will also allow English and Spanish language readers to fully enjoy the work of Gabriela Mistral.

NUEVA YORK, Septiembre 20, 2014—Noventa y dos años después de la publicación en la ciudad de Nueva York de su primera edición, la gran obra de Gabriela Mistral “Desolación,” la primera traducción completa de este importante libro ha sido publicado por Latin America Review Press, con traducciones de Liliana Baltra y Michael P. Predmore. Esta edición sera presentada en eventos especiales que se realizarán en:

Aunque Gabriela Mistral comenzó su carrera de poeta en su tierra natal, su primer libro no fué publicado en Chile sino que en Estados Unidos, en la ciudad de Nueva York. En 1922, por iniciativa de estudiantes de la Universidad de Columbia y de su profesor, el crítico de literatura de lengua hispana, Federico de Onis, la editorial del Instituto de las Españas de Nueva York—ahora conocido como Instituto Cervantes—publicó la primera edición del libro de poemas y ensayos “Desolación.” El libro incluye poemas que hablan de amor y muerte como el conocido “Sonetos de la Muerte.” Mistral escribió la mayoría de los poemas incluídos en este libro, diez años antes cuando vivió en la ciudad nortina de Coquimbito en Chile. Las traducciones ofrecen una mirada a las costumbres chilenas en la época de Mistral—muchas de las cuáles aún son parte de la cultura nacional. Esta edición bilingüe, ofrece excelente material de referencia y estudio para profesores y estudiantes de literatura latinoamericana y también permitira a lectores de la lengua inglesa disfrutar la obra de Gabriela Mistral.
